ANAHEIM, CALIF. (January 25, 2010) Students from St. Catherine’s Military Academy were recognized for their contribution to the School Supplies for Iraqi Children campaign. Cadets collected a variety of school supplies ranging from pencils and erasers to backpacks and electronics. Students collected about 300 school supplies. The soldiers of US Army HHC 720 Expeditionary Signal Battalion recently sent the cadets a certificate in recognition of their support.
The project was organized by sixth grade teacher Pattie Mallard who was alerted to the campaign by her nephew, an army sergeant in the HHC 720 Expeditionary Signal Battalion. She thought it would be an excellent way to teach service learning values, which are emphasized at St. Catherine’s. “The goal was to help our students find ways to meaningfully contribute to society,” said Mrs. Mallard.
This collection, nicknamed “Iraqi School Kids” by the cadets was initiated by servicemen who re-deployed to the area and wanted to make a difference to the children of the war-torn area. St. Catherine’s students were just one group to contribute. In total, hundreds of pounds of supplies were collected and distributed to local Iraqi schools through this campaign.
